FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About
What is non-sedation pet dental cleaning?
Non-sedation dental cleaning means your pet stays fully awake and alert throughout the procedure. We use professional dental instruments — the same ones used on humans — to gently remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria from your pet's teeth without any anesthesia or sedation.
As a Registered Dental Hygienist, Susan possesses the expertise to use both hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers with precision, aided by tactile sensitivity to detect calcified tartar below the gumline. This level of skill is what sets professional dental hygiene apart.
Is the cleaning safe for my pet?
Absolutely. Our cleaning process is gentle and performed by a licensed dental hygienist with over 32 years of experience. We use the same careful techniques used in human dentistry, adapted for pets. Your pet's comfort and safety are our top priority.
We carefully assess each pet before beginning and adjust our approach based on their temperament and health. If at any point we feel a pet is too stressed, we'll stop and discuss alternatives. Your pet's wellbeing always comes first.
How long does a dental cleaning appointment take?
Appointments are scheduled in 2-hour increments. The actual cleaning typically takes 45–90 minutes depending on your pet's size and the amount of tartar buildup. The extra time allows us to work at your pet's pace without rushing.
We never rush a cleaning. Each pet gets individualized attention and care. If your pet needs a break, we take one. The goal is a thorough, comfortable experience for your furry family member.
How often should my pet get a dental cleaning?
We recommend professional dental cleaning every 6–12 months, depending on your pet's oral health. Some breeds are more prone to dental issues and may benefit from more frequent cleanings. We'll advise you on the best schedule during your appointment.
Regular professional cleanings help prevent periodontal disease, which can lead to tooth loss and systemic health issues affecting the heart, liver, and kidneys. Prevention is always easier and more affordable than treatment.
What breeds benefit most from dental cleaning?
Small breeds like Yorkies, Dachshunds, and Chihuahuas are especially prone to dental disease due to crowded teeth. However, all breeds benefit from professional dental care. Large breeds can develop significant tartar buildup that leads to gum disease if left untreated.
Regardless of breed, regular dental check-ups help prevent painful conditions and keep your pet healthy. We customize our approach based on each pet's unique dental anatomy and needs.
How do I book an appointment?
Book your appointment online through our pet portal or contact us directly. We recommend booking in advance as our schedule fills quickly.
How do I book an appointment?
Yes! We recommend booking in advance as our schedule fills quickly. You can book online through our pet portal or contact us directly. We'll confirm your appointment and send you preparation instructions.
We strive to accommodate all scheduling needs. For the best availability, we recommend booking 1–2 weeks in advance. Urgent appointments may be available — just reach out and we'll do our best.
What is dental charting?
Dental charting is a detailed record of your pet's oral health. We document each tooth's condition, noting any areas of concern such as tartar buildup, gum inflammation, or loose teeth. This creates a baseline to track your pet's dental health over time.
Just like your dentist charts your teeth, we do the same for your pet. It's a professional standard that most pet dental cleaning services don't offer, but we believe your pet deserves the same level of care as humans receive.
Will I receive a copy of my pet's dental chart?
Absolutely. You'll receive a complete copy of your pet's dental chart after each visit. This is valuable information to share with your veterinarian and helps us track improvements between cleanings.
Sharing your pet's dental chart with your veterinarian gives them valuable insight into your pet's oral health. It helps create a comprehensive health picture and can alert your vet to potential issues early.
How does charting help my pet's health?
Dental charting allows us to identify problems early — before they become painful or expensive to treat. By tracking changes over time, we can recommend preventive care and catch issues like periodontal disease, fractured teeth, or gum recession before they progress.
Many pet owners are surprised to learn that dental disease is the most common health problem in dogs and cats. Charting helps us stay ahead of these issues and create targeted care plans for your pet.
Do you take before and after photos?
Yes! We take detailed before and after photos of your pet's teeth during every cleaning. These photos show the dramatic difference professional cleaning makes and help you visualize your pet's oral health progress.
We believe in complete transparency. Photos provide clear visual evidence of your pet's dental health and the value of professional cleaning. Many pet parents are shocked at the difference!
Can I see examples of your work?
Yes, we're happy to show you examples of our work. The before and after results speak for themselves — you'll be amazed at the difference a professional cleaning can make.
Before and after photos are one of the best ways to understand the impact of professional dental cleaning. They also help you recognize signs of dental issues at home between visits.
How do I access my pet's dental photos?
Your pet's dental photos are included with your dental chart and can be shared digitally. They're a great visual record to share with your veterinarian.
Having a visual record alongside the dental chart creates a comprehensive picture of your pet's oral health journey. It's a valuable resource for both you and your veterinarian.
Do you document the cleaning process?
We photograph each cleaning session to document the condition of your pet's teeth and gums. This visual record helps track changes between visits and provides evidence of the cleaning's effectiveness.
Our thorough documentation approach reflects our commitment to professional standards. Every pet we see receives the same level of detailed care and record-keeping.
What should I look for in the photos?
Look for the difference in tartar and plaque levels, gum color (healthy gums should be pink, not red or swollen), and the overall brightness of the teeth. We'll walk you through everything during your visit.
Our hygienist will review the photos with you and explain what she found during the cleaning. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about maintaining your pet's dental health at home.
What qualifications does your hygienist have?
Susan holds a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene (BSDH) from Central Michigan University with 32 years of clinical experience. She holds active dental licenses in both Michigan and Florida, and is certified for Local Anesthesia from the University of Michigan — though she does not use anesthesia on pets.
Unlike many pet dental cleaning services that rely on brief training programs, Susan brings decades of clinical experience from human dentistry. Her ability to feel and identify tartar, decay, and tooth anatomy through touch is a skill developed over years of practice that cannot be replicated with a short certification course.
What should I prepare for the consultation?
Just bring your pet! It helps if your pet hasn't eaten a large meal right before the appointment. If your pet has any known health conditions or is on medications, please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly.
If your pet is on any medications, please bring a list. Letting us know about any behavioral tendencies (anxiety, sensitivity to certain areas) helps us prepare for the best possible experience.
Do you offer follow-up consultations?
Yes, we're happy to schedule follow-up consultations to check on your pet's progress. We can also provide guidance on home dental care routines to maintain your pet's oral health between professional cleanings.
We recommend rechecking your pet's teeth about 4–6 weeks after their first cleaning. This allows us to assess healing and determine the best ongoing care schedule for your pet.
Do you offer mobile services?
Yes! We offer convenient mobile dental cleaning services. We come directly to your home, eliminating the stress of car rides and unfamiliar environments for your pet. This is especially beneficial for anxious pets or senior animals.
Home-based dental cleaning eliminates two of the biggest stress factors for pets: car rides and unfamiliar environments. Your pet stays in their comfort zone while receiving professional-grade dental care.
What areas do you serve?
We currently serve the Bonita Springs, Naples, and greater Southwest Florida area. Contact us to confirm we serve your specific location.
We're expanding our service area regularly. If you're just outside our current range, please contact us — we may still be able to accommodate you.
What equipment do you bring?
We bring all professional dental instruments and equipment needed for a thorough cleaning. All we need from you is a comfortable, well-lit area where your pet feels at ease, and access to a power outlet.
Our mobile setup includes professional ultrasonic scalers, hand instruments, polishing equipment, and everything needed for dental charting and photography. You get the same quality of care as a clinical setting, right in your home.
How should I prepare my home for the appointment?
Set up a quiet, comfortable area with good lighting. A table at a comfortable working height is ideal. Having your pet's favorite treats nearby can help with positive reinforcement. We'll handle the rest!
A calm environment helps both your pet and our hygienist work more effectively. If you have other pets, it may help to keep them in a separate room during the appointment.
